Guadalupe Torch, ‘Antorcha Guadalupana,’ To Arrive In Los Angeles From Mexico City Sunday, September 13
— The Torch will be taken to parishes throughout the Archdiocese as part of three-month celebration commemorating the 10th anniversary of the naming of the Virgin of Guadalupe as the Patron Saint of the Americas —
The Guadalupe Torch (Antorcha Guadalupana) with the Holy Flame from the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, along with the pilgrim images of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, will arrive in East Los Angeles on Sunday, September 13, at St. Marcellinus Parish, 2349 Strong Avenue, 90040. A procession to the parish will begin at 10AM, at Rosewood Park, 5600 Harbor St. in the City of Commerce.
The 2009 Guadalupe Committee of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles sent a delegation of Catholic faithful to Mexico City to receive the Holy Flame from the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is the second year the Guadalupe Torch has had a pilgrimage in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
The Torch along with the pilgrim images of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, will be taken to parishes throughout the Archdiocese as part of a three-month celebration commemorating the 10th anniversary of the proclamation of the Virgin of Guadalupe as the Patron Saint of the Americas by Pope John Paul II. The Archdiocesan celebration will culminate at the 78th Annual Procession and Mass in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 6, in East Los Angeles.
“Ten year’s ago, the Holy Father Pope John Paul II, blessed our Church in the Americas by naming Our Lady of Guadalupe as our Patroness,” said Monsignor John Moretta, Pastor of Resurrection Church and Chair of the 2009 Guadalupe Committee. “The theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Do Not Be Afraid,’ is the very words Our Lady of Guadalupe said to St. Juan Diego 478 years ago. Those words continue to lift the hearts of our people in light of the difficult times many of our brothers and sisters are facing today, from the economic crisis to the separation of families because of a lack of immigration reform. We are honored to have the Antorcha Guadalupana with us once again to share Our Blessed Mother’s message of hope with the people of Los Angeles.”
