Office of Justice and Peace

The mission of the Office is to educate the people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on the principles of Catholic social teaching and its application to contemporary local, national, and international issues; to advocate for public policy which affirms human life and human dignity and reflects a consistent life ethic; and to develop a constituency on social concerns. The Office--in conjunction with the Justice and Peace Commission--seeks to accomplish its mission through its various projects and programs including legislative advocacy, education, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and Catholic Relief Services.
We look forward to hearing from you about how we can best assist you in your efforts to work for peace and justice!
Justice and Peace Commission
The Justice and Peace Commission is an advisory body to the Office of Justice and Peace and supports the Office in its work to advance its mission. 9. Launch of the Creation Sustainability Ministry for the Archdiocese ~~ October 10, 17, 28 and 31, 2010
****************************
Cardinal Mahony will be announcing the establishment of the Creation Sustainability Ministry. Through this ministry, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be joining with Catholics around the world in putting our religious mandates of Creation, along with our calling to be proper stewards of life into practice. The Archdiocesan Office of Justice and Peace, along with the Office of Synod Implementation, has formed the Creation Sustainability Committee (CSC). Its purpose is to assist our faith communities to reflect upon our calling to be co-creators, to become more environmentally sustainable, and to generate meaningful dialogue with the larger Southern California community as it faces environmental challenges.
To celebrate this ministry, the Regional Bishops have selected a venue for their efforts towards energy efficient and other sustainable practices. Each Bishop will be offering a mass to launch this ministry and parish leaders are invited to attend to learn more about efforts your parish can undertake to make your facilities more sustainable and efficient.
The calendar for all these events is as follows:

4 Christian Brothers Investment Services Hotels and Human Trafficking Initiative
****************************
In April, 2010, 300 clients of Christian Brothers Investment Services, faith-based organizations, and socially responsible investors, including members of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR), sent a letter to eight major hotels with chains in South Africa to learn about actions being taken to combat human trafficking and child sexual exploitation in advance of The World Cup. While not responsible for these crimes, hotels can help to stop the use of their facilities for these purposes. We asked the hotels if they were training staff to be observant to signs of human trafficking, working with local authorities to protect victims, encouraging employees to report incidents to hotel management, and publicly reporting to stakeholders on progress.
Thanks to your support, we now have information from all the hotels we contacted. To read CBIS’ full report, go to http://www.cbisonline.com/page.asp?id=1047 for a review of hotel responses, policies and programs to address child sexual exploitation. The report’s major findings include:
Remember, when you stay at a hotel, be sure to give a letter to the front desk to share your concerns about human trafficking. To download the letter, visit http://www.cbisonline.com/page.asp?id=1017. Please let us know if you have used the letter and if you have taken other steps to encourage hotels to combat human trafficking.
Be sure to check CBIS’ SRI Action Center at www.cbisonline.com in the coming months for more ways to become involved and share your concerns. Thank you for your interest in and assistance with improving the social and environmental performance of corporations.
